A recent survey by Arthur Andersen ranked Ulster County #1 nationwide for its low labor and real estate costs.
For more than 40 years, Ulster County was home to 10,000 of IBM's hi-tech and manufacturing workers. Reluctant to give up their high quality of life, nearly 30% of Ulster County's workers now commute more than one hour each way to work - and more than half of those commute 90 miles to New York City. Nearly 80% of these workers would prefer to work in Ulster County, providing immediate access to a highly trained labor pool.
Specifically, HVBC tenants can benefit from the following:
- The immediate area (surrounding five counties) offers an available workforce of over 400,000 and the Mid-Hudson Valley workforce (comprised of nine counties with proximity to the HVBC) totals over 1,000,000. An additional workforce of over 520,000 resides in Albany, just north of the HVBC. (New York Department of Labor, 1996 and 1997)
- According to the New York State Education Department, a total of 21,259 Hudson Valley-area students received degrees and certifications in 1995-1996 from the area's 32 universities and colleges.
- Area workers are 20% more productive than the national average - generating $5.89 for every dollar paid in wages.
